This is the best of what GM had to offer in the mid-late 1980's and very early 1990's. The ultra rare 1LE option was reminiscent of the COPO cars from the original Musclecar era. 1LE was a "Road Racing Performance Package" offered by GM as a way to compete with the Saleen Mustangs. The first production year of the 1LE was in 1988 and only 4 models were produced. By 1992 there were over 750 produced... The next best option for the street was the G92 optioned which became a full "performance package" in 1990... featuring a more aggressive cam (in the 5.0 manual five speed models) 3.42 gears, high flow exhaust, weight saving options and a few more goodies. Coupled with the WS6 package, made for one exciting driver... and gave many 5.0 Mustangs fits on the streets and tracks during this period. The only Mustang from this era that these F-bodies could NOT handle on the dragstrip was a very low optioned 1986-93 Mustang "Notchback" Coupe LX (non-hatch trunk model) as they were simply a 3,000 lb. ponycar with 300 lb. ft of torque. and recorded 1/4 mile times in the 14.1 range whereas the 1LE and G92 F-bodies were in the 14.4 range at best. Put these rivals against each other on the road course and the F-bodies were years ahead of the 5.0 Mustang in handling and braking... and the only way the Mustang could compete with these 4-wheeled disc braked, panhard rod & torque arm equipped F-bodies is by shelling out $$$ for a Saleen Mustang.
