Listen tonight on http://www.freedomslips.com/revolutionradio from 8PM-10PM EST for me to elaborate more on this and other things I learned this week for my new astronomy radio show called "Collision Course" every Wednesday night. Updated July 27, 2011 1:43PM CDT (Texas) Good afternoon comet watchers; It's Wednesday. Today we get a look at my whiteboard of All three comets and the images I took of Comet Elenin on June 19, 20, and 22. These are the first three nights of imaging with the Global Rent a Scope network of telescopes. I never used one of these systems before and the only reason why I was there now was because my father-in-law was not going to get his newly purchased telescopes and cameras up and running in time to take these images of Comet Elenin before it goes in front of the Sun. For the first five nights I was using a combination of telescopes. I started with GRAS-014, TAK FSQ-106ED wide field view telescope because I felt like I could get more area which means I would have a better chance of getting it in the frame. I didn't realize then that the telescope was going to a spot in space that is determined by a mathematically known position. Basically, if the comet was not in the image it was because the coordinates were not given correctly. The problem with the wide field view is that it is such a large image that a tiny comet is that much smaller to discover. It's hard to discover because the "centroid" of an images is still just an area and doesn't have a finger pointing to the comet. So by night five I was trying out the GRAS-004, TAK Epsilon -250 SBIG ST-8XE. Don't ask me what that means please because I may know in a year but this has only been a couple of months of work for me. What I did find out was it was taking an image of a smaller section of space. Less stars and shit to look through is better than the other. These three days is the transition from the GRAS-014 to the GRAS-004. The GRAS-004 is the one I went to the most. I was getting to a point that as long as I could see it I was happy. These three nights were not happy nights because I struggled to even find the comet and on top of that I didn't know how to get the coordinates from the file like I do now. I feel better knowing I can plot the coordinates and see that I'm pointing where I should be pointing. At this time, (June 24, 25, and 26) I had no idea what I was looking for. I knew then that on June 20th I saw an object in my image that must be the comet because it wasn't there the day before and it wasn't there two days later. I knew when I looked at these pictures then (June 24, 25, and 26), as I do now, there is not very much visual data in these three images to help me explain what Comet Elenin is. I'm doing this thing with the narration where I go back to then and think about it in the now. Do not get confused when I'm talking about the day I took the picture and then about how I'm thinking right now. The thoughts can be the same or they can be different. The reason why I started was to find an answer; not to know one. The only way I can be true to myself and you is by showing you what I am doing to find out for myself. The only thing I know for sure is I don't know enough. If there is something to see in the images I took, I plan on bringing that to light in the very near future by reexamining everything I have.
